AVI30419 Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot) prepares you for a role in the Remote Aviation Industry and will provide you with the skills and knowledge to operate remotely piloted aircraft (drones) commercially. The curriculum has been uniquely designed to also incorporate the CASA Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) in a single course.

This qualification is relevant to individuals who are interested in technology, engineering, aviation, photography, surveying, science, ecology, drama and performance arts, construction, surf lifesaving + shark spotting, environmental sciences, forestry + agriculture, data + analytics, natural resources + energy and education.  With new application constantly being developed the opportunities to build a career either as an employee or as a self-employed operator, operating remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) are endless.

This course incorporates Remotely Piloted Aircraft System operations within Standard Operating Conditions (SOC):

  • within visual line of sight (VLOS)
  • below 400 feet above ground level (AGL)
  • in day visual meteorological conditions (VMC)
  • outside of controlled airspace
  • greater than 3 nautical miles (5.5 KM) from an aerodrome
  • operations outside of populous areas

  • Developing best practice procedures and protocols for remotely piloted operations
  • Obtain permissions, exemptions and exclusions for operations outside of Standard Operating Conditions
  • Operating aeronautical radios
  • Conducting Job Safety Assessments, Risk Assessments and how to obtain and analyse information from multiple sources.

Remote pilots operating at this level will apply technical and non-technical knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy and judgement and will take limited responsibility in known and stable operational contexts within established regulatory parameters.

Curriculum

14 units of competency – nine core units and 5 elective units to gain Certificate III qualification.

On successful completion of this course students will also qualify for their CASA Remote Pilot’s License (RePL) and may also choose to complete the AROC (Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate) for an additional fee.

The qualifications gained through this course form the necessary requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as described in Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) part 101 and the Manual of Standards (Part 101) 2019 (revised 2023).

The Australian Qualifications Framework determines that the duration of this qualification is 1 – 2 years, however with both face-to-face training, practical flying days, and flexible online learning, learners are typically completing within the first 6 – 12 months. How quickly an individual is able to complete the course will depend on how fast they work through the content, their commitment to learning and their level of competence.

Requirements

  • Access to a computer/tablet/smart device with docs, word processing, email, Zoom/other, PDF reader capabilities and a reliable internet connection
  • Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) levels that indicate you have a high probability of being able to successfully complete the course. Skills Generation can help assess your current LLN levels as required to ensure we are able to effectively support you
  • Ability to allocate appropriate study hours per week

The Commonwealth Government requires all learners undertaking nationally recognised, accredited training courses to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).  Learners are unable to enrol without their USI.

If you are currently working, or have previously worked in a relevant industry, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL applies where you have workplace experience/competency that can be formally assessed against the units of competency in this course. If you wish to undertake an RPL process, please discuss with our Student Services enrolments team.

Funding and Fees

This course currently attracts government funding for eligible students. Depending on the funding program, students who access funded training may be required to pay a co-contribution fee that represents a small fraction of the total course fee.

Students eligible for subsidised training under government funding programs can normally only access the funding once, so it is important that you choose your course carefully.

Eligibility criteria for funding can be found on our Funding and Fees page or contact us to discuss your circumstances and determine your eligibility.

Students who are not eligible for subsidised training pay the full course fee.

Students may also complete their Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC). The AROC is optional and attracts an additional fee for those students who decide to gain this certificate. Students eligible for Government funding may be exempt from paying the AROC fee, depending on the funding program.

Payment Plans are available through the PaySmart payment platform making it easy for students to make weekly, fortnightly or monthly payment instalments.
