Benefits of Studying This Course

Qualified Remote Pilots, who hold a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Licence, can choose to either set up their own business (by completing an additional qualification Remote Operator's Certificate (ReOC) or may choose to work as a Remote Pilot either independently or as a qualified Remote Pilot in one of the many organisations that are rapidly building their Remote Aviation capabilities.

In addition, past students have gone on to work as Remote Instructors, Chief Remote Pilots and Senior Remote Pilots all across Australia.

At Suas Rov, we work hard to ensure that your learning experience aligns with industry expectations, ensuring you are 'hands on' with real world practical skills, in addition to understanding where, when and how to operate your remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) safely and within the complex regulations.

Employment Opportunities

Our well trained, licenced Remote Pilots are now working across many industries.

Several considerations are important before commencing your journey as a Remote Pilot, firstly, what existing skills and capabilities do you currently have?  If, for example, you worked hands on (on the tools) and gained a technical capability, why not use this valuable experience to help build your future career.

Alternatively, if you are pivoting your career and want to move in a different direction, how will you build contacts in your new area?  What other things should you be considering such as; do you want to build a business with many pilots working for you or do you prefer to work alone?

What market sectors are you going to focus on? Are there government incentives available to help you get started?

In Victoria, for example, the Melbourne Innovation Centre helped Suas Rov up our website and marketing plans, they also gave us access to mentors and industry experts who helped us develop our business plan and guided us through the mobilisation of our company, similar schemes are in operation in most states.

Do your homework, check out who is employing (Seek or Indeed are great for checking out current job opportunities), what are they looking for? Do you have some of the skills they need?, its not all about the licence but it is a great place to start!

The Remote Aviation Industry is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide.  In Australia, we have witnessed exponential growth every year with many companies now struggling to attract and retain experienced and qualified Remote Pilots.

In 2018 we hardly ever saw a role advertised for a Chief Remote Pilot, this year, we have seen almost a dozen Chief Remote Pilot Roles with Salaries well over the $200K mark for suitably qualified individuals.

Remote Pilots must consider the other skills and practical expertise they will bring to the market in order to make them stand out, have your technical skills or IT experience? If not, is there a course available to build these micro qualifications? Remember, in a rapidly growing industry, the needs and expectations of employers and clients will also continue to grow and develop, so it is key to keep on top of industry developments and changes to regulations.

At Suas Rov we see education as a life-long journey, we are proud of our great record and as both a CASA Certified Training Organisation and a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), we are the perfect partner to help you build your skills and grow your brand in this industry.

Past students now work across many industries including:

  • First Responders
  • Fire Fighters
  • Health Care Professionals
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Viticulture
  • Environmental Management, Land Management and Wildlife Protection
  • Surf Life Saving and Shark Spotting and Photography

  • Data Acquisition, Analytics and Data Science
  • Technology and Mechatronics
  • Surveying, Construction, Architecture and Asset Management

Check out our 5 Star reviews here!

Who Issues the Remote Pilot's Licence (RePL)?

Once you have successfully completed a Remote Pilot Licence Training course with a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Certified Training Provider, they will submit your paperwork to CASA who will issue you with your Remote Pilot's Licence.

Your licence will arrive as an email from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Why do I need a Remote Pilot's Licence?

If you wish to fly a Remotely Piloted Aircraft within three nautical miles (5.5 KM) of an Airport, or if you wish to fly a Remote Piloted Aircraft that weighs more than 2KG for commercial or research purposes, you must hold a Remote Pilot's Licence.

What Remote Pilot Licence Training Courses do Suas Rov Provide?

We provide both 7KG and 25KG Remote Pilot Licence Courses.

The 7KG Licence allows you to operate multi-rotor aircraft that weight up to 7KG, the 25KG course allows you to fly multi-rotor drones that weigh up to 25KG.

The theory elements for both courses are identical, we believe that providing students with all of the necessary information  is the key to operating safely, the main difference between the courses is the weight of the aircraft you will fly for your practical assessment.  Irrespective of which course you choose, you will have an opportunity to fly several different aircraft within your weight category.

Does Suas Rov provide jobs for Remote Pilots?

As a training provider, our primary role is to ensure that you know where, when and how to fly safely and in accordance with the regulations issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

We do, on occasion, receive requests from our industry partners, seeking qualified pilots, we ONLY recommend pilots that we have trained,

Past students of Suas Rov hold positions across many industries both a Remote Pilots and as trained professionals who have obtained a Remote Pilot's Licence with us.

How long does my Remote Pilot's Licence Last?

Currently, you do NOT have to renew your Remote Pilot's Licence, however, given the rapid increase in Remote Pilot Licence holders and the cost and administrative burden this poses to the Regulator (CASA) this may change over time.

As a Remote Pilot Can I fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS)?

The short answer is NO!

Remote Pilot's who hold a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Remote Pilot's Licence (RePL) are restricted to flying within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) under Standard Operating Conditions (SOC).

In order to Fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) you must first complete training and then undertake the CASA OCTA BVLOS examination at an approved CASA Test Centre.

Suas Rov offers a two day BVLOS training course that will prepare you for the CASA examination and includes practice exams, hints and tips and guidance from our expert instructors.

What is the difference between EVLOS and BVLOS?

Extended Line of Sight (EVLOS) refers to the use of spotters along a flight path who are in constant communication to ensure that the aircraft is following a predetermined flight plan.

EVLOS operations must be described in detail in the Operations and Procedures Manuals of the Remote Operator's Certificate Holder (ReOC) and must be submitted to CASA for approval.

Once approved, the organsiation may conduct EVLOS operations in accordance with the described procedures. (Additional approvals may be required).

For Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Operations, the Remote Operator must hold either an Instrument Rating (IREX) or CASA OCTA (BVLOS) Qualification that requires completion of an examination.

Once the Remote Operator is in receipt of one of the above qualifications, they may seek approvals from CASA for BVLOS operations, noting that separate approvals may be required for each operation.  BVLOS operations utilise SORA risk assessment methodologies and can be complex in nature, Remote Operators seeking approvals for BVLOS operations will also have to describe in detail (in operations manuals and procedures library) how such operations will be conducted and risk assessed.

For many organisations EVLOS operations afford a preferred option for extended operations, all be it at an additional cost in terms of manpower.

Who needs an Aeronautical Radio Operator's Certificate (AROC)?

We strongly recommend that all Remote Pilots also complete an Aeronautical Radio Operator's Certificate (AROC).

The AROC qualification allows an operator to communicate by transmitting on and Aeronautical Radio, utilising prescribed terminology in order to ensure the safety of their operations and other airspace users.

Only holders of an AROC may transmit on an Aeronautical Radio, and while you do not require an AROC to monitor transmissions on and Aeronautical Radio, specific regulatory controls are in place.

In addition, should you wish to seek approvals from CASA to conduct operations in Restricted Airspace, or within 5.5 KM of an Airport or to conduct operations outside of Standard Operating Conditions, the use of an Aeronautical Radio by the holder of an AROC is essential.

Suas Rov provides comprehensive AROC training over one day and includes all theory and practical elements.
