With ever evolving technological advances, drones are increasingly utilised across a wide variety of industries. The anticipated growth in the uptake of drones will create new opportunities for industry by improving/automating production processes and leading to cost savings over the medium to long term.

Emerging areas where drones are being utilised include new transport delivery services, e-commerce, digital twin creation, content creation, 3D Mapping, Orthomosaic Creation, Crop Health and Analytics (NDVI etc.), Agricultural Spraying.

Current in demand areas include Ecology and Land Management, Data Acquisition and Analytics, Research, Environmental Sciences and Preservation, Alternative Energy, Technologies of the Future, Agriculture and Viticulture, Education and STEM to name but a few!

Deloittes’ estimate that over the next 10 years the increasing usage of drones will add 2,000 jobs per annum in the sector and deliver an estimated economic benefit of up to AUD$15 billion over the same period. This qualification will position you uniquely to be part of this growth story.

Key tasks and functions this qualification will prepare you for include:

  • Preparing for Remote Aviation operations
  • Performing operational inspections on remote pilot aircraft
  • Launching, flying and landing remote pilot aircraft
  • Operating multi-rotor remote pilot aircraft systems
  • Controlling remote pilot aircraft systems on the ground
  • Regulatory requirements and record keeping
  • Developing best practice procedures and protocols for remotely piloted operations
  • Obtain permissions, exemptions and exclusions for operations outside of Standard Operating Conditions
  • Operating aeronautical radios
  • Conducting Job Safety Assessments, Risk Assessments and how to obtain and analyse information from multiple sources.

Remote Pilots operating at this level will apply technical and non-technical knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy and judgement and will take limited responsibility in known and stable operational contexts within established regulatory parameters.

Curriculum

Content is mastered to meet both CASA and Higher Education Regulatory Requirements.

On successful completion of this course students will also qualify for their CASA Remote Pilot’s License (RePL) and may also choose to complete the AROC (Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate) for an additional fee.

The qualifications gained through this course form the necessary requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as described in Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) part 101 and the Manual of Standards (Part 101) 2019 (revised 2023).

There are 10 modules of competency to gain your Remote Pilot's Licence (RePL)

On successful completion of this course students gain their CASA Certified, Remote Pilot’s License (RePL) and will be eligible to achieve the CASA Certified, Aeronautical Radio Operator Certificate (AROC) for an additional fee of $485.

 Theory Examination

In order to obtain your Remote Pilot's Licence you must successfully complete a multiple choice examination, this is a closed book, supervised examination administered by Suas Rov's instructors.

Typically there are 100 questions and you have aproximately two hours in which to complete the exam.

Prior to the exam you will have lots of opportunities to take practice quizzes and exams and to work through sample questions with your instructor.

Practical Assessment

As part of your practical training day you will work through a number of manoeuvres with your Instructor in order to prepare you for your Practical Assessment (flight test).

The practical training day is a fun day out in the field working with a variety of different drones.

Your instructor will ensure you have the necessary skills and flight time to ensure you successfully complete your practical assessment.

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded your Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Remote Pilot's Licence (RePL).

Typically this is a standard University Elective (12 weeks or compressed to 6 weeks) awarding 12.5 Credit Points.

Requirements

  • While there are no specific prerequisites for the course, General English Language Proficiency is necessary.

  • Access to a computer/tablet/smart device with docs, word processing, email, Zoom/other, PDF reader capabilities and a reliable internet connection

Aviation Reference Number (ARN):

CASA requires all licensed personnel to hold an Aviation Reference Number (ARN) . This is how CASA uniquely identifies you and records your training and license credentials, you must hold an ARN in order to sit your remote pilot's license exam.  There are two types of ARN, an individual ARN and a Company ARN.  If you are considering Commercial Operations we would recommend that you get both, then you can add it to your company in the future.
